Why a short link stopped working

1 min read · Updated 17 Aug 2026

The four things that make a link stop forwarding.

For: EveryoneDifficulty: Easy⏱ 2 min

A link that has stopped forwarding shows a “no longer available” page rather than a plain error, so you can tell it apart from a typo.

Step by step

  1. Check whether the link has expired — the expiry date is shown when you edit it.
  2. Check whether it was switched off. Editing a link has an active setting, and turning it back on restores it immediately.
  3. Check whether it was deleted from your list — deleting a link cannot be undone, so anything already printed with it is dead.
  4. Confirm the destination itself still exists — a short link cannot fix a page the other site has taken down. Edit the link to point somewhere that works.

Tips

  • Anything printed deserves a QR code pointing at a link you can re-point later, rather than a raw URL.
